Players that participate in the Pat Quinn Classic compete for more than a trophy. There are three $1,000 scholarships annually for participants in the tournament.
The Vancouver Canucks Alumni are a foundational partner in the Pat Quinn Classic. Both the tournament and the scholarships recognize Pat Quinn’s passion for creating leaders on and off the ice, and his unwavering commitment to give back to the community.
Two scholarships are sponsored by the Vancouver Canucks Alumni under the names of Pat Quinn and Cliff Ronning – both Honoured Members of BC Hockey Hall of Fame. The third scholarship is under the name of Kirk McLean. Kirk is an Honoured Member of the BC Hockey Hall of Fame and a member of the Vancouver Canucks Ring of Honour. This scholarship is sponsored by Gary Pooni, of Brook Pooni Associates, and a good friend of McLean and the Vancouver Canucks Alumni.
The tournament received 32 applications which selected the recipients on behalf of the Vancouver Canucks Alumni. Members of the selection committee are Cliff Ronning, honourary chair of the Pat Quinn Classic, Kalli Quinn, daughter of Pat Quinn and Jennifer Scott, event director of the annual tournament.
The recipients of the first annual scholarships are:
Adam Leitch (Bantam Male Elite Division). A grade nine student at Burnaby Central Secondary School, Adam plays for the Burnaby Winter Club Academy Prep. Adam says: “Hockey is shaping me to be the person I want to be. What I mean is that all of the demands on my time aren’t hard, because no matter what, I get to play a game that I am proud of.” He regularly participates in fundraising activities for the less fortunate in the community.
Kaz Soda (Bantam Male Division). Kaz is a grade nine student at A.R. MacNeill Secondary Incentive Program and plays for the Richmond Jets. Kaz says: “Hockey has helped me develop into not only a better player but a better person. It helped develop my personality and my social skills.” He volunteers every week at St. Albans Church providing community meals for the homeless.
Jayla Jeske (Peewee Female Division). Jayla is a grade seven student at Royal Oak Middle School in Victoria and plays for the South Island Royals. Jayla says: “Leadership and teamwork are always the main goals I strive for, on and off the ice. To me, positivity is a must when playing hockey. I always cheer on everyone, win or lose, never get down on anyone after they have made a mistake and I am always respectful.” She’s a volunteer and participates in fundraisers for her local Ukrainian Dance Association.
Thank you to all that applied, and congratulations to our winners!
